Technical Questions Tips & Tricks

Moving onto technical questions. This is different, because there is really no way to fully prepare yourself for the technical parts. You can see an example employment of these tips when I walk through *my* sample interview question.

Mental Preparation

You are not expected to have come across the interview questions before. A lot of times, the questions will require creative thinking. For example, the last question in the civil engineering interview list was for the candidates to list all the ways a car’s mass could be measured in 30 seconds. The point of the interview is not to test how much knowledge you have (this is done in your A level/IB exams), but rather to see how good you respond under pressure, your problem solving skills, and how you respond and digest new information.

Be methodical

Try and be calm as much as you can. Divide the problem into smaller parts that you will know, and try to go with there. Feel free to ask for small clarifications from the interviewer. Often times, the interviewers will give you hints to see if you can pick them up. Be methodical in your approach.

Speak your thoughts aloud

The interviewer does not know what you are thinking. Do not just sit there in silence for 10 minutes staring at the question. Speak your thoughts out aloud when you are doing the questions, and walk your interviewer through your thought process. Communication is a key skill to have! Also the interviewer cannot help you or give you hints if they do not know what you are having trouble with. Use diagrams/drawings/graphs/equations to help illustrate your point if you can.
